A major telecommunications company was experiencing reliability and performance challenges with their DNS servers, which were utilizing open source DNS software. These servers were operational, in twenty cities. Although service redundancy was achieved through IP Anycast they would malfunction during specific network loads resulting in a considerable number of customers losing connectivity.

The planning department said the load would exceed the maximum possible throughput of the DNS infrastructure in the region within six months. The operator attempted to resolve the issue by turning its traditional suppliers but received a response that due to supply chain disruptions it would take them eight months to ship the equipment.
