A caching DNS server — a recursive resolver — answers subscribers’ queries and stores the results, so repeated lookups are served from cache instead of crossing the internet again. In an operator network, it is the component that most directly determines how fast the internet feels. Nameto CNS is that component, built for carrier traffic — high sustained query volumes and large subscriber bases — and designed for years of continuous operation.

General-purpose open-source resolvers can be run at carrier scale, but doing so takes real engineering effort: tuning, capacity planning, monitoring, and around-the-clock expertise. Use case 1 — Replacing failing open-source resolvers, no architecture change — Use case #1

A major telecom operator ran its caching DNS on open-source software across sites in twenty cities, with redundancy provided by IP anycast. But anycast only protects against node failures: under specific traffic patterns the resolver software itself failed — on every node running the same code — and large numbers of subscribers lost name resolution.

Solution — Use case #1

Nameto proposed a software cutover, not a rebuild: replace the resolver software with Nameto CNS on the same standard hardware, keeping the existing anycast design and addressing untouched. Once the operator agreed, the sites were migrated to Nameto CNS.

The outages stopped. Since the migration, the resolver layer has run without disruptions or subscriber-affecting incidents. On the strength of that result, the operator moved its mobile division’s DNS traffic to Nameto as well — and gained a DNS platform it no longer has to think about.

A national mobile operator had watched DNS load climb in one of its regions for years. Its planning team forecast that within six months, load would exceed the maximum throughput of the region’s DNS infrastructure. Incumbent equipment suppliers, hit by supply-chain disruptions, quoted eight months just to ship new hardware — the capacity wall would arrive before the boxes did.
